Aksys Games, publisher of the popular Zero Escape franchise, is the company stepping up to deliver the latest game in the series.
Shiren the Wanderer gets its rogue-like roots as the first original IP in the Mysterious Dungeon franchise from Chunsoft. Those who have played the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games might have a minuscule idea of what to expect, but not exactly on the same of level of difficulty. This series pounds players into the dirt, challenging them to really think about their decisions and item usage if they want to see where these random dungeons eventually lead.
The feudal Japanese setting adds a nice touch as well.
Sadly, we’ve had very little exposure to Shiren the Wanderer in the West. Previous releases extend to a SEGA published Nintendo DS port of the Super Famicom original and a Wii game salvaged by Atlus back in 2010. The Nintendo DS game is one of the true hidden gems on the system, unsung as one of the best JRPGs on a system overloaded with classics.
This entry, Shiren the Wanderer 5, was originally released for the Nintendo DS in Japan and then ported to the PSP shortly afterwards. Shiren the Wanderer 5 Plus acts as a remaster with better screen resolution and more content within the dungeons.
I gotta say, I hope Aksys picks some new art to sell the game with, though. The anime that Spike Chunsoft has concocted for the series lately doesn’t do the in-game aesthetics any justice.
